To be a teacher is to wear many different hats. You’re the teacher of curriculum- their math facts, how to read, and learning the science behind our world. But you’re also the one who helps foster relationships and teaches the importance of respect and friendship. And even though it is not in the job description, you’re the one that can teach how to tie a shoe, be the one who can supply a missed meal, or act as a therapist for friendship difficulties. But, most importantly, you’re the one your students can rely on. I believe that children have the right to a quality education and one that teaches them to love learning, friendship, and themselves.
I believe that education must give children the tools they need to grow. It must teach students useful skills, help them develop their character, and foster curiosity of the world around them in order for them to be the best version of themselves they can be. Educators must prioritize teaching life skills, utilizing collaboration with peers, and recognize the importance of social emotional learning in their schools. As a teacher, it will be my goal to help my students find interest and excitement in what they get to learn in school. I want my students to enjoy what they are learning, to be emotionally well- rounded, curious, and to wonder beyond the school doors.
As students age, they won’t remember everything they learned in each grade, but they’ll always remember the teachers that made a positive impact on their life. My biggest belief is that building relationships with my students is the most important part of being a teacher. In order to give my students the quality education that they deserve, they need to feel like they are respected and loved in my classroom. I want to be someone my students can rely on. A smiling face that lets them know they’re capable of anything they want to do. I want my students to know that they can come to me for anything, and someone that they know will believe in them no matter what.
My classroom will be a place of community. It will be a place where learning is exciting and welcomed. It will be a place where friendship and kindness are the two most important values. I will also prioritize the importance of social emotional learning. Teaching my students from the first day together to the last; the skills they can use to regulate their emotions and foster healthy social relationships with friends, family, and peers. I will prioritize respect and kindness in my classroom. Reiterating to my students all year long that we are all a team. I will work hard to teach my students to work collaboratively with others, to listen attentively, and ways to foster healthy friendships. I will work with my students to learn the importance of respect for themselves and those around them. I want my students to reach their full potential, to believe in themselves, and feel that they are capable of achieving anything that they set their minds to. I will work to make my classroom a safe place, a place that my students can always come to and expect to be listened to, respected, and loved no matter what.
For some students school is exciting, for others it is overwhelming and daunting. It is my goal as a teacher to show my students all that school and learning has to offer. My students will learn how to be good humans, how to be kind, respectful, curious, and to never give up. I will do so by focusing on building quality relationships with each and every one of my students. I will work hard to make my classroom a loving and welcoming place for everyone. At the end of the school year I want my students to be able to find curiosity in everything they do, to leave my classroom still showcasing kindness and respect to their peers, and to know that Miss J always believed in them every step of the way.
